pottery and silver jewellery classes, Ohakune

Clay and silver, taught properly, slowly

I've been running classes out of the old cheese factory building since 2016, fitting them around the ski season when the town fills up and the quiet months when it doesn't. Most people who come in have never thrown a pot or sawn a piece of silver before, which is exactly who the classes are for.

What comes off the bench

The maker

The studio

It's one room with two wheels, a long bench for silver work, and a wood burner that gets going the moment the first frost hits the paddocks. Classes are kept small on purpose, so there's always a hand free to help if your clay collapses or your ring won't sit round.

“Did the ring class on a wet Tuesday between ski runs and ended up wearing it home. Didn't expect to make something I'd actually keep.”

Common questions

Do I need to book aheadYes, especially in June through September when the town is busy with skiers. A few days notice is usually enough outside that.
When do I get my potteryPottery needs a bisque firing of about a week and a glaze firing of another week after that, so allow two to three weeks total before it's ready to collect.
Can I collect my silver piece the same dayYes, silver work is finished and polished before you leave, there's no waiting on that.
What if I can't come back to collectI post finished pottery around the country for the cost of postage, just let me know before you leave.
Is this suitable for childrenThe hand building classes suit children from about ten, with an adult working alongside them. The wheel and silver classes are better for teenagers and up.
